Introduction

Welcome to our class webpage! This year I hope that you will develop an intellectual appreciation and understanding of important writers like Mary Shelley, Aldous Huxley, Zora Neale Hurston, and William Shakespeare. You've also told me that you would like to practice writing formal essays and exercising correct grammar.

Required Reading:
We just finished a unit on science fiction, and now we are studying Romeo and Juliet. You will need the following books in the next month or two:
• Shakespeare, William. Romeo and Juliet. Washington Square, 2004. ISBN 0743477111
• Salinger, J.D. The Catcher in the Rye. Little Brown, 1991. ISBN 0316769487

Required Materials:
• English-only binder (1” or larger) with labeled dividers for the purpose of storing notes, handouts, and writing assignments
• Hole-punched two-pocket folder to be used as a writing portfolio. Papers may undergo several drafts; please keep all drafts in your folder.

Policies:
1) Assignments are due at the beginning of class. Please write your name, class section, assignment, and the date at the left side of each page. All outside written assignments must be typed using Times New Roman 12-point font, and double-spaced.
2) If you are absent, you should contact a classmate or refer to this page for missed assignments. If possible, you should work on those assignments during your absence. This will prevent you from becoming overloaded and falling further behind upon your return to school. It is ultimately your responsibility to complete assignments and make-up work.
3) Any improper short-cutting reflects badly on your work and your personal ethical standards. You are cheating if you…
• Review SparkNotes summaries before class rather than completing the assigned reading. If I see you consulting SparkNotes before or during class, I will suspect you of cheating.
• Let mom or dad write that English paper for you.
• You fail to quote a source. This is plagiarism. If you plagiarize, you will receive a zero on the assignment and your parents and the principal will be notified.
